Kala Pul - the Black Bridge chronicles cultural, political, and religious conflicts of fictional characters in 21st century Karachi. It is a gritty tale of fugitive Arsalan's return to present day
Karachi after the violent death of his younger brother which has been blamed on religious extremists. In the ensuing four days he discovers that his younger sister has become a successful professional, his younger brother has turned into an extremist and his best friend has
become involved in money laundering. He parties with the Karachi elites, is beaten up by the police, is kidnapped by religious fundamentalists and helped by the catholic minorities. The play is a kaleidoscope on the vibrant cultures of Karachi, described as one of the most violent cities of the world. The title, Kala Pul, is based on a bridge in the city which connects the affluent parts of the city to the lower income area. Arsalan grew up under the shadows of the Kala Pul, caught between the two worlds of haves and have nots, one world of MTV inspired 'burgers' and other of the left behind fodder for the Kalashinikov culture.

Project kick Off

I am finally moving on a staged reading of my movie script, KALA PUL.

I am aiming for TWO (2) performances in San Francisco and maybe one in the South Bay.
Rehersals will be SUNDAY Afternoons at Stanford at the Gates computer science building, or hopefully at ROTEE resturant on Webster and Haight in the city.
Only Major roles need to attend all. Most supporting/minor can do with 3 rehersals only.

Audition At Stanford

We are holding auditions for the dramatic staged reading of KALA PUL. Looking for both MALE and FEMALE SOUTH ASIAN ACTORS. This is a non-paying gig; however actors will get credit and media. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons in Stanford or San Francisco and the shows will be in San Francisco in April.

KALA PUL, the Black Bridge is a feature film screenplay being adapted into a staged reading. It is a gritty tale set in Karachi, described by some as one of the most violent cities in the world. The protagonist, ARSALAN is a fugitive who returns to Karachi after twelve years to investigate the violent death of his younger brother. The story revolves around his experiences with socialites, political and religious vibes of the city.

KALA PUL

KALA PUL, the Black Bridge is a feature film screenplay. It is a gritty tale of three days set in Karachi. The protagonist, ARSALAN is a fugitive who returns to Karachi after twelve years to investigate the violent death of his younger brother which has been blamed on the religious parties. The story revolves around his experiences with the social political and religious aspects of the city. In the story he discovers that his sisters has become a successful professional, his younger brother turned a fundamentalist Muslim and his best friend a textile mogul. He parties with the Karachi elites, is beaten up by the Police, kidnapped by religious fundamentalist and helped by the Christian minorities.

In a way, the movie is kaleidoscope on the various cultures of Karachi, described as one of the most violent cities of the world. The title, KALA PUL, is based on a bridge in the city which connects the affluent parts of the city to the lower income area. ARSALAN grew up under that bridge, so he has always been caught between the two worlds of haves and have nots.
